6 Tips To Prevent Fires During The Holidays

It is December and most people in our town have now decorated their homes, both indoors and outdoors. Everything is beautifully lit-up and I love watching thousands of glittering lights sparkle the streets, and Christmas trees shining inside everyone’s home.

With electricity on all night, extension cord overloads, candles burning, ovens baking, and more, use those 6 tips to stay safe from fires this Holiday season! I had the pleasure of partnering with the experts at Safer Alarms and record their best safety tips.

1- Christmas Tree

There are 2 kinds of Christmases – those with a toddler in the house, and those without! If you have a toddler at home, you’ve probably realized very quickly that ornaments have become his new favorite toy… He is excited for everything hanging and fascinated by the lights. With that new attraction will come pulling, sucking, and the danger of the tree falling on baby.

Think about it – you have brought in a 4 to 8-foot high tree into your home. It is only held up by a small stand, and the last thing you want is for the whole thing to come crushing down.

Tips: wrap green gardening twine around the mid-section of the tree, use a baby gate around the tree if you really need to make it off-limits, and tape any extra lighting cord directly to the wall, to prevent baby from pulling on the extra length!

2- Tree Ornaments

In our family, we like to get a new ornament each year, which tells a story about our year. We generally stick to bigger ornaments so we can see them and talk about them throughout the season. If you have any smaller ornaments and a baby around, try to hang those higher to avoid chocking!

If you have glass ornaments, like we do, you might want to store them away until baby is older. What I personally do, is hang them to high windows. Simply hang them to a transparent cord and pin them to the top of a window. If the glass is tinted, you will love the reflection of the light on them!! And there will be no risk of anyone pulling on them and breaking them!

Tip: decorate the bottom of the tree with ribbons or larger cloth-covered ornaments.

3- Christmas Tree Lights

Nothing like a lit-up Christmas tree. After 4PM in our house, it is fair game – I get to light up the Christmas tree and get cozy by the shimmering lights. But with lights comes potential danger. We should remember to never attach more than 3 strands of light together.

Tips: Look for cords designed to go up the tree trunk and individually light each strand and make sure the cords are high enough for pets to not chew on them!

4- Fireplace

If you have a fireplace in your home, make sure children are aware of the danger! Just like the Christmas tree, your toddler will be attracted to the fire. Set firm ground rules and be sure that everyone understands them. If you have young children at home, follow the tips below:

Tips: securely fasten a gate or screen in front of the fireplace. You will not only protect children from burns, but rugs, carpets, and furniture from burning ashes. Check your fire extinguisher and make sure it is still in good shape!

5- Cooking

With Christmas comes cooking and baking. Oh the smell of freshly baked cookies… 🙂 When  cooking with young children in the house, make sure they know basic safety measures – staying away from hot appliances such as ovens and toasters and never plugging in an electrical appliance with wet hands!

6- Candles

I always have candles burning around the house – they smell good and look cozy. A few nights ago however, I went to bed and forgot to blow the one on my desk. I thankfully woke up the next morning to the last bit of it burning… but it could have been the whole house burning!

Be extremely careful with candles and never leave them burning overnight! If candles are on your holiday table, be aware of the risk of them falling over and igniting a table cloth or drape!

Tips: set a nightly reminder on your phone to blow candles. Consider a scented electrical candle, which will be much safer to use, especially if you have a toddler or two running around!

Happy Holidays!

I wish you all a happy and safe Holiday season! Following those 6 easy tips will ensure you and your local fire department have a wonderful season 😉 Happy Holidays!
