Reserva Nacional de Paracas
🪂
After you’ve visited Islas Ballestas, head over to the National reserve. Both can be visited the same day and you are able to purchase a ticket that includes both the islands and the reserve, for a discount.

🌊 The national reserve is one of our planet’s most incredible designs! We were in awe of the expansiveness of its desert, the contrast between sand and sea, the technicolor views, and variety of landscapes. From Great Ocean Road vibes to Sahara feels, and wild beaches thrown in the middle, do not miss it!

🚗 Access is in Paracas, a 4-hr drive from Lima, also accessible by bus or on day trips from the capital with all the major tour operators!

Islas Ballestas (Ballestas Islands), Paracas, Peru
⛵️
Commonly known as the Galapagos of Peru, Islas Ballestas are visited by group boat from the small town of Paracas.

🦭 Get ready to be amazed at the local wildlife, from seals to penguins, dozens of bird species and whales for the lucky ones!

😁 Of like us, you’re not a fan of group tours… the only way to do this privately is to buy out the entire boat of 50+. But truly, the boats are well built, the tour guide uses a microphone, the captain makes sure both sides of the boat get to see all animals, and we had a really good time!

💵 Yes, we’ve shopped multiple tour operators, single guys selling the tour from the port, and tried negotiating… but everyone sells the same tour, for the same price. Don’t waste your time… everyone is loaded onto the same boats in a single-file line.

👍🏽 This is a fun way to explore Paracas from the ocean and to come close to the animals. We found the experience very respectful of the wildlife and highly recommend the ride!

Peru isn’t just Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu. There is so much more to this country and we’ve only scratched the surface.

A 4-hr desert drive down the coast south of Lima, makes place to a small coastal town and expansive parks.

🐧 The Galapagos of Peru, also known as Islas Ballestas, are visited by boat. A 2-hr ride visiting several smaller islands populated by seals, penguins, and birds.

🐪 Reserva Nacional de Paracas, a desert falling into the ocean, sand as far as the eye can see, wild beaches, and one of the tallest dunes in the world.

🏖️ We treated ourselves to a bit of luxury after an intense week in Cusco. We stayed at The Legend Paracas Resort by Hyatt, and I can only recommend it. Food prices were a little crazy, but we found awesome local restaurants in Paracas to satisfy our Peruvian food cravings!

More info coming on Islas Ballestas and the National Reserve in the next couple of posts.

#paracas #islasballestas #penguinsofinstagram #reservanacionaldeparacas #desert

Cusco and Sacred Valley are high and altitude sickness is real and uncomfortable. From shortness of breath to headaches, fatigue, nausea, overall unwellness… it can hit anyone, though we found the younger kids to have the hardest time.

🛬 You land in Cusco at 3,400 m / 11,150 fit high, and if you are not used to high altitude, a few steps will help make your trip a success:

☕️ Drink mate de coca tea throughout the day, you may even start in Lima! Alternatively, or in addition, you may chew of coca leaves. Most accommodations offer both!

💤 Spend landing day resting and acclimating. Take a long nap to recover from your trip, walk slow, drink a lot, go for a gentle stroll through the city. Do not overdo day 1!

⛰️ If you plan on visiting a rainbow mountain, keep it for later in your itinerary. We visited Palcoyo on day 2, and the baby didn’t have a great time…

🚗 If Cusco feels too high and you suffer from altitude sickness, drive down and stay in the Sacred Valley. It is roughly 600 m / 2,000 ft lower, making it much easier to breathe.

Let us know if you have more tips!

There is so much to the Sacred Valley, you will want at least 3 or 4 days to fully take it in.

🚕 Cusco is a very different destination and while nothing prevents you from driving, you will likely hire a driver to take you around to the different sites - we used @incashappytraveler for all of our Cusco days and they had competitive rates and amazing service!

📍 I have shared the sites in the order we have visited them but do as feels right for your itinerary. If you should skip a couple for time purposes, leave out Tambomachay and Puka Pukara

🛕 If your budget permits, hire a guide to join you in the taxi. Without one, you will find that the sites are pretty empty of explanations or signs. A guide will help you get the most out of your visits and to understand what you are looking at!

Enjoy the Sacred Valley, it is a rich place in history. The Incas were incredible and left behind a ton of knowledge. It is the perfect place to world school, kids and parents 😉

Machu Picchu is a bucket-list item. We went in with no expectation, thinking we wouldn’t be impressed after visiting all of the Sacred Valley Inca ruins… boy is there a reason for it being a world wonder!

🎟️ You need a park reservation to enter the site. Book your ticket as early as possible. Circuit 2, the most popular one, and the one taking you to the renown photo point, books out 2 to 3 months in advance

⏰ Book your entry time wisely. We got the 7AM ticket and got the dreamy clouds lifting over the Huyana Picchu mountain. We got in the bus line by 5:50AM in Aguas Calientes and were some of the first to enter, allowing for a fairly empty first look. It fills up quickly… while we recommend an early ticket, the afternoon ticket means less crowds!

⛰️ Do not shy away from circuit 3, if that’s your only choice. The Huyana Picchu hike is steep, but the views are incredible and very few people take the hike. It’s a very special experience

🗺️ 100% hire a guide! There are no sign or explanation of while on site. Without a guide, you will have no idea what you’re looking at. A guide is a must. Ours cost about $60 for the ruin part of circuit 3A (half the length of circuit 2)

🛌 Spend one night in Aguas Calientes, either before or after your visit, depending on your timed entry. A round trip from Cusco would make for a very long day… and Aguas Calientes is cute and a fun atmosphere

🚍 Purchase your bus tickets (Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu and back) in person in Cusco or Aguas Calientes. Payment is in cash only (dollars accepted)

😬 If you are in Peru with no ticket to Machu Picchu, make your way to Aguas Calientes and try to grab a next-day ticket to the ruins. About 100 tickets are released each day for the next

Machu Picchu is not a cheap day, but you will never forget the way you felt as you stepped foot in another time.

A round trip from Cusco would make for a very long day… and Aguas Calientes is cute and a fun atmosphere 🚍 Purchase your bus tickets (Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu and back) in person in Cusco or Aguas Calientes. Payment is in cash only (dollars accepted) 😬 If you are in Peru with no ticket to Machu Picchu, make your way to Aguas Calientes and try to grab a next-day ticket to the ruins. About 100 tickets are released each day for the next Machu Picchu is not a cheap day, but you will never forget the way you felt as you stepped foot in another time. #machupicchu #machupicchuperu #machupicchutravel #visitmachupicchu #peruwithkids

There are 3 circuits at Machu Picchu. Circuit 2 is the most popular one and gives you access to that point of view for the typical Machu Picchu photo. However, it books out 2 to 3 months prior to your visit, and if you plan last minute like we do 😬 you may be left with circuit 3…

🎟️ Note that the tourist bureau sells about 100 next-day tickets in Aguas Calientes, and you may get lucky and grab a circuit 2 that way.

🥾 Circuit 3A is a special itinerary that includes Inca royal ruins - the second half of circuit 2, but won’t get you to that popular photo spot. However, you will get a view of Machu Picchu, seen by very few.

⛰️ The second half of circuit is the hike of Huyana Picchu - the iconic mountain behind Machu Picchu. It looks mighty from the bottom and I can’t say that our kids were our biggest fan at that point 😅

😮‍💨 So yes the hike is hard… it’s straight up from beginning to end, with a bit of scrambling at the top. It wasn’t great with a baby or baby hiking carrier… and our 9-month old didn’t love the experience…

🏞️ But the hike isn’t terribly long (count 1.5 to 2.5 hours RT - we ascended in 28 minutes and probably took about an hour total), it is fairly high altitude, and the views at the top are jaw dropping! No vertical photo can do it justice… the river serpentine around the ruins and seeing this world wonder with a Birds Eye view brings a whole new level of appreciation.

👍🏽 So yes, our family gave Circuit 3A is a giant YAY!!

Cusco, Cusco 🏳️‍🌈 Capital of Incas, gateway to the Sacred Valley, departure to Machu Picchu, 3,399m / 11,150ft high.

💨 If you know us, you know we rarely spend more than 1 or 2 nights anywhere. For Cusco, we planned 6 days - 5 nights, and I wish we’d had an extra day to visit a gorgeous mountain lake.

1️⃣ Land as early as 7AM in Cusco and spend your first day acclimating. Start drinking mate de coca (a local tea), drink plenty of water, take a long nap, and gently stroll through town to start acclimating to the high altitude. Grab lunch at Mercado San Pedro.

2️⃣ Buy a Boleto Turistico and hire a driver to take you to the Inca archaeological sites of Cusco. Add in Pisac to your day, you won’t regret it!

3️⃣ Keep working on your Boleto Turistico and visit the Inca sites of the Sacred Valley. Plan a good hour to stroll through Ollantaytambo before boarding an afternoon train to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll spend the night.

4️⃣ Reserve (at least 2 months prior) an early entry ticket to Machu Picchu - today is the big day. Hire a guide and jaw drop at this incredible site. Board the train back to Cusco.

5️⃣ It’s been three very intense days… today, chill in Cusco, stroll San Blas, eat an alpaca burger, and visit a couple of museums (some are included on the Boleto Turistico).

6️⃣ If you’re up for it and feel acclimated to the altitude enough, hike to a rainbow mountain. Both are 5,000 m / 16,404 ft high, and you’ll need half to a whole day to travel there and back.

That’s a PACKED 6 day - 5 night itinerary of Cusco and its region. If you have the luxury of time, add a day in as acclimation buffer or to visit a mountain lake. Cusco is surprising in the most beautiful way, enjoy it!
